What you will do

At HAN BioCentre and the Biobased Innovations research group, we aim to develop knowledge to support the raw materials transition — a shift essential for slowing down climate change. Your work will contribute to this knowledge development.

You will conduct analytical chemical research at our laboratory in Nijmegen and possibly Arnhem, under the guidance of an experienced project leader and in collaboration with companies. Your tasks include analyzing materials —primarily textiles— using various techniques (such as IR spectroscopy, chromatography, and mass spectrometry) to determine precise polymer composition and the extent of recycling, as well as testing new bio-based solvents and separation techniques for the biorefinery of organic residual streams from agriculture and horticulture, enabling these streams to be processed into new products like biopolymers. Your specific tasks will depend on your interests and experience; supervising students may also be part of the role. The position is initially for a one-year term.

What we are looking for in you

You have completed a relevant laboratory education, at least at Bachelor’s level, possess at least two years of work experience. You have solid practical knowledge of analytical chemistry. Experience with biochemistry and physical chemistry is advantageous. You have a hands-on mentality and experience with troubleshooting. You are enthusiastic, flexible, result-oriented, and a team player. You possess good interpersonal skills and have a sufficient command of spoken and written English.

Useful to know

Within HAN BioCentre and the Biobased Innovations proffesorship, we conduct practical research together with students, focusing on the question of how we can make responsible and smart use of living nature. We work closely with companies that share our ambition.

HAN BioCentre is a Centre of Expertise in Applied Biosciences and Chemistry with the main themes being Biobased Innovations, Bioinformatics | Data Science and Drug Discovery. We like to share our knowledge and facilities with companies, professionals, teachers and students.

Our expertise concerns, for example, the production of biobased raw materials based on fermentation, the development of separation methods for full utilization of residual flows from agriculture and horticulture, and the development of new drugs by adapting substances extracted from plants. We are also working on alternative test methods to replace animal testing or designing methods and software to harness the enormous amount of available (genetic) data for our tasks.

About the Academy

The Academy of Applied Biosciences and Chemistry trains students in Chemistry, Biology and Medical Laboratory Research, and Bioinformatics. We also have a Master Molecular Life Sciences, an Associate Degree and research in Drug Discovery, Biobased Innovations and Data S cience. Our education is innovative, of high quality and we shape it in close cooperation with the (international) work field. Education, research and practice come together within this academy.
